They also owned the Cedar Valley and Mount Lucye estates. Their other estates were the Harts & Royals, which were each 206 acres in size. There was also the Blizard estate, which was only ninety acres. The Shands had 13 children, including a son named Francis. According to Mr. Fraser, president emeritus of the Barbados National Trust, the site was once a slave hospital and is surrounded by sugar cane. He has been working towards the restoration of this historical site. The former school was destroyed in a fire about a decade ago. Today, the site is the only one of its kind in Barbados.

The land was once known as Middleton’s Mount, and by the late 17th century, it consisted of 379 acres and around 130 enslaved labourers. During this time, the island was under Dutch colonial rule, and Barbados required slave labour from West Africa. This land was purchased by William Rawlin in 1699, with a PS5,000 mortgage. It passed through a series of owners, including Jonathan Blenman, in 1735.
